Serving others is the best way to celebrate the holidays

A Resigility Holiday Day of Service.

Serving others is the best way to celebrate the holidays

With today marking the final day of Hanukkah and just 19 days until Christmas, our teams in Atlanta and the Greater Washington, D.C., area are looking forward to kicking off the first Resigility Holiday Day of Service. This new initiative aligns with our mission of “working with clients to build resiliency and agility in their organizations and the communities in which we live.” Even more important, advocating for deserving organizations reflects our belief that serving others is the best way to celebrate the holidays.

Atlanta Community Food Bank

On Friday, our Atlanta team will kick off our first Holiday Day of Service by volunteering to fight hunger at the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Our staff will join other volunteers in sorting and packing recently donated food, repackaging produce or grains for families, or boxing nonperishable items for seniors. We’re excited to support “ACFB,” which works with more than 700 nonprofit partners — including food pantries, community kitchens, childcare centers, shelters and senior centers — to distribute over 67 million meals to more than 1 million people estimated to be food insecure across metro Atlanta and north Georgia.

So Others Might Eat

Next week, it’s our D.C. team’s turn to get in the holiday spirit by volunteering at So Others Might Eat (SOME), an interfaith, community-based service organization that helps and supports residents experiencing homelessness and poverty. We’ll prepare meals at SOME on Dec. 17 and then serve them the next day. Based on SOME estimates, there are 5,111 men, women and children experiencing homelessness in our nation’s capital, and nearly one in five D.C. residents living at or below the poverty line, based on pre-pandemic levels. It’s an honor to contribute to SOME, which enables our most vulnerable neighbors to find pathways out of poverty and on the road to long-term stability and success.

Giving back

Our Atlanta and D.C. teams selected ACFB and SOME because we believe food is one of the three core rights for all people, along with shelter and access to health care. We also recognize the incredible need in our respective communities, especially given adverse pandemic effects and related social and economic impacts.

The Holiday Day of Service is not the only way our team gives back. Resigility provides each staff member with four days of paid time off per year for community service projects of their choice, for example:

  • Jeff Anderson and his family believe scouting is important. His two daughters achieved the Girl Scouts of the USA’s highest honor — the Gold Award — while his son earned the Boy Scouts of America’s equally prestigious Eagle Scout rank. Most of Jeff’s volunteer time has been with the Boy Scouts, where he’s served in adult leadership roles since his son started scouting in 2011. As an assistant scoutmaster today, Jeff provides guidance and suggestions to his son’s troop, and organizes weekend or longer adventure activities.
  • For the past seven years, Dannielle Sherrets has coached Special Olympics women’s gymnastics and cheerleading teams from Northern Virginia’s Area 26. In addition to traveling with the athletes to state games each summer, she has increased performance opportunities at basketball and football games at George Mason, George Washington and Georgetown universities. Through ImpAACt Voices, Danielle also leads “hangouts” for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) users to build relationships and communicate with their peers.

Given pandemic restrictions last year, Resigility matched employee giving to nonprofits up to $250 per person. Other past service initiatives have included providing Thanksgiving meals to families in need and participating in holiday adopt-a-family projects.

Making a positive difference

We’re excited to make the Resigility Holiday Day of Service an annual event demonstrating our commitment to the two communities where we and our clients live and work. Please join us in making a positive difference in your community this holiday season and throughout the year. Happy Holidays!
